With three decades of AMA racing under Red Bud's belt, it was no surprise that the fans showed up in droves, even for Saturday practice. It was pandamonium throughout the Michigan-based facility and the racing kept the vocal crowd excited all day Sunday as Kawasaki continued its podium dominance with James Stewart and Ryan Villopoto adding to their respective winning streaks.
MOTOCROSS LITES MOTO ONE When the gates dropped for the first moto of the Independence Day weekend at Red Bud, MDK/KTM's Ryan Sipes snatched up the holeshot with teammate Martin Davalos in tow. After one lap, Sipes retained his initial lead with Davalos just behind. Ryan Villopoto scratched his way up through a few positions to reel in the leader. It wasn't long before RV blasted by the KTMs and took over the lead. Geico Powersports Honda's Trey Canard soon slid into second with Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki's Nico Izzi nipping at his heels. Izzi's teammate, Ryan Dungey, however, found himself trying pick his way through the pack. Sipes, clearly unnerved from losing three spots, battled back midway through the moto to regain a position on Izzi. With Villopoto out front, Canard did his best to keep the Sipes behind him while he attempted to reel in RV1. Canard's teammate, Josh Grant continued his surge to get his speed back after his hiatus from racing and the young California resident held on for fifth place in front of Davalos. Dungey, meanwhile, could only scrape out an eighth-place finish after his poor start.
MOTOCROSS CLASS MOTO ONE When the big bores lined up for the first moto of the Motocross class, all eyes were on Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki's Mike Alessi to see if he would grab yet another holeshot to add to his small stack of stellar starts. When the gates dropped, Alessi did, indeed, grab another holeshot. His lead wouldn't last past two laps, though. Monster Energy Kawasaki's James Stewart quickly snuck in to take over the lead. Red Bull Honda's Andrew Short found his comfort zone in the third position after a good start while his teammate Davi Millsaps reeled him in. Unfortunately for Davi Donut his luck ran out early in the moto; he went down and could not finish the race. Monster Energy Kawasaki's Timmy Ferry found his groove and he weaved through the pack and into contention with Shorty. Michael Byrne also showed some speed and battled with Ferry for fourth. Ferry, however, overtook the fourth place spot and held on until the checkers flew. Shorty held his ground as well and claimed the final podium spot behind James Stewart and Mike Alessi.
MOTOCROSS LITES MOTO TWO MDK/KTM's Martin Davalos grabbed the holeshot of the second and final Lites moto with Ryan Villopoto right on his heels. Davalos could not keep Villopoto at bay and the Pro Circuit rider quickly took over the number one position. Trey Canard, aboard his Geico Powersports Honda also moved past the KTM rider. From there it was all Villopoto. The redhead immediately packed his bags and checked out. Canard tried to keep him honest and not let him open up to big of a lead, but the East Coast Lites champ could not gain any ground. Ryan Dungey, however, was gaining ground on Canard throughout the moto, and it seemed it would come down to a late-lap battle. Dungey, however fell out of contention in the closing laps and would finish outside the top twenty. Dungey's mistake opened the door for Davalos, who was running in fourth, and KTM rider would hold on for a podium finish and a third overall trophy.

MOTOCROSS CLASS MOTO TWO James Stewart snatched the holeshot from Mike Alessi, but tragedy struck before the racing could unfold. After the first jump of the initial lap, Alessi swapped out and ejected only to be landed on repeatedly. The moto was red flagged and the racers were forced to restart (more to come on the condition of Alessi as we learn more). When the second gate dropped, Stewart blasted out in front and did not look back. Shorty and Ferry, however, commenced a battle royale for the second position. All moto long the two battled like the action scenes in Gladiator. Michael Byrne and Cody Cooper followed suit with a war of their own. The tenacious Cooper would not let Byrner shake him and it wasn't until the late laps that Byrner would rid himself of the New Zealander's vie for position. Homestate hero, Nick Wey, took advantage of the war of the lads from down under and scooted into fifth just in front of Cooper just before the first 30 minutes had concluded. In the end, Ferry outlasted Andrew Short and Shorty had to settle for third. It was a one-two finish for Monster Energy Kawasaki in the second moto.
